Additional author prompt example: Additional Instructions

Important note: Item Assist will only use this prompt when an author inputs specific instructions such as "All response options must be 2-4 sentences in length." (The prompt will be ignored unless an author adds instructions to it when generating items.)

This additional author prompt asks the author to indicate specific requirements for the generated questions.

Summary of configurations

Below is a summary of the content to add in each field on the Additional author prompts configuration page in Item Assist. 

  • Field name: Additional instructions
  • Context: Add specific requirements for the stem or multiple choice options. [This is just an example, you can input any text.]
  • Prompt: [Input a single space to indicate that the author will provide the specific instructions.]

Add the "Additional instructions" author prompt

  1. In the FIeld name field of the Add author prompt area, input Additional instructions. 
  2. In the Context field, input instructions such as Add specific requirements for the stem or multiple choice options. 
    1. The text you provide will appear in the Item Assist authoring prompt when authors hover over the tooltip. (Context is not sent to Item Assist; it is simply used to help authors understand the goal of each prompt.)
  3. In the Prompt field, input a single space to indicate that the author will provide the specific instructions.
  4. (Optional) Toggle Author must enter this prompt before generating content to on  to require authors to input instructions into this prompt. If the toggle is set to off , authors can skip the prompt when generating items. 
  5. Click Add. 
    1. The prompt is now shown in the Added author prompts panel.
  6. Click Save. 
    1. The prompt is now shown to authors in Item Assist in the Additional author prompts section. 
  7. You must now add a placeholder for this author prompt in the content generation prompt. If you do not add this placeholder, Item Assist will not use the prompt to generate items.

Add the "Additional instructions" placeholder to the content generation prompt

  1. Click Prompt on the Item Assist home page. 
  2. In the Content generation prompt, place your cursor after the first few sentences in the prompt. (You can start a new paragraph after the first sentence, if desired.)
  3. Click the Additional instructions button on the right side of hte page in the Additional author prompts section. 
  4. The placeholder is added to the prompt. 
  5. Click Save.
